Changes to our Educational Discounts – 2019/20 https://themadmuseum.co.uk/changes-to-our-educational-discounts-2019-20/ Thu, 05 Sep 2019 14:23:17 +0000 https://themadmuseum.co.uk/?p=5781 The post Changes to our Educational Discounts – 2019/20 appeared first on The Mechanical Art & Design Museum.

]]>

From 1st October 2019 The MAD Museum is increasing its educational prices. These discounts have not been changed in over 7 years and since they were first put in place, we have made the following improvements to the museum and to our educational services:

 1. We opened an interactive room in The MAD Museum with a large marble run wall and other STEAM-appropriate hands-on activities.
 2. We have increased the number of exhibits by 18% meaning there’s now even more to see and interact with.
 3. We have tailored KS1, KS2 and KS4 activity packs which specifically coincide with what is offered at MAD and what is part of the National Curriculum.
 4. We now offer Cam automata kits and Linkages automata kits at a discount to schools. These fun yet educational classroom activities support the STEAM subjects and come with worksheets for teachers and pupils, straight-forward instructions and lesson plan videos.
 5. We have improved the sensory and tactile aspects of The MAD Museum meaning the museum’s environment provides a more multi-sensory experience, as well as being more enjoyable and beneficial for SEN groups.
 6. Teacher resources packs for KS1-KS4 years groups are now available. These help teachers with lesson planning and also support teachers before, during and after group visits to our museum.

We feel our new educational packages justify this new price increase. As an independent family run business, we try to keep our prices reasonable and fair. Occasionally we do need to make changes. We are sorry if this causes you any problems.

Please contact Katie Madley if you have any questions or issues you wish to discuss.

What are Gears?

Gears rotate together to move part of a machine. They are a fundamentally important mechanism in everyday life, you’ll find them in cars, clocks, kitchen mixers, bikes, vacuum cleaners and many other items.

Gears are wheels with teeth that slot together. They allow the user to alter direction, adjust the speed, measure time and create a large amount of force with a small amount of impact.

New to MAD

You told us you liked the interactive elements in our museum so we recently installed a large gear wall in our interactive area.
Like our marble run wall, visitors are encouraged to think up and try out their own creations. Learn about energy and forces while having fun!

Try our NEW Linkages construction kits – brought to you by Timberkits.

Timberkits supply our MAD Museum with many different automata building kits (find out more here) but they have recently expanded on their educational range.

For some time now we have been offering the Cam construction kits which prove very popular with school groups and families looking for a wet weather project.

We are now offering Cam kits and Linkages kits. Both priced at £3.00 per kit when bought as part of a school/ home education group.

If you are interested in finding out more about these construction kits, please look at our Educational Page or Contact Us to find out more.

We have been working with Timberkits since we opened MAD in 2012. They are a fantastic, small independent business located in Wales. They seem to constantly come up with amazingly imaginative and witty moving sculptures for customers to buy and their products seem very popular in our shop.

A week after we started displaying a fantastic new rolling ball sculpture by Robert Moore, we were lucky enough to get another mind-boggling creation!

Meet The Juggler by David Bowerman.

TEMPORARY EXHIBIT – ON DISPLAY UNTIL 28TH MAY 2019

The ‘Juggler’ is loaded with steel balls which make a never-ending journey from the top to the bottom of the yew trunk and back up again. Each ball takes 47 seconds to find its way downhill through the maze of holes that pepper the trunk.

As one reaches the bottom, it triggers the release of the next ball and advances the clock movement. After fifteen minutes, a total of 19 balls have travelled from top to bottom. The 19th ball in the cycle is principal assistant to the ‘Juggler’, triggering a reaction which as David well knows “Never fails to brings a big smile to everyone’s face, from young children to octogenarians”. As the clock strikes the quarter, all hell is let loose. A ball shoots skyward like a rocket and then drops and plops gracefully into the leather cup mounted on top of the trunk which helps cushion the impact. Nineteen times this happens, and it has to be seen to be believed.

The ceiling of David’s workshop bears witness to the long process of trial and error as it is literally peppered with dents and felt-tip crosses marking the path of many hundreds of wayward balls.

The ‘Juggler’ is always second-perfect because it has a radio receiver tucked away inside which listens to the national atomic clock and keeps a constant check on the time.

Find out more here –http://www.davidbowerman.co.uk/juggler.html

We are so excited about this new piece from David! It’s clever, witty and beautifully handcrafted – all our favourite things in one sculpture! We’ve had it on display for a day now and it already seems to be a hit with our visitors. This is will on display at MAD for 2 months so shouldn’t be missed!

New Exhibit – The Infinitram https://themadmuseum.co.uk/new-exhibit-the-infinitram/ Mon, 18 Mar 2019 11:47:05 +0000 https://themadmuseum.co.uk/?p=4955 The post New Exhibit – The Infinitram appeared first on The Mechanical Art & Design Museum.

A few days ago, one of our very favourite artists, Robert Moore brought a brand-new exciting exhibit to display at MAD. Since we first opened our museum in 2012, Robert has exhibited several fantastically whimsical and clever rolling ball machines and ‘Infinitram’ is the latest.

After some technical issues in which the Team at MAD struggled to manoeuvre the exhibit carefully into the museum meaning that we had to close the museum for the day and take half of our staircase apart, we finally put the ‘Infinitram’ into its new home.

This incredibly large piece is unlike any of Robert’s other rolling ball sculptures. With its black façade, the user needs to look through small holes to see the inner workings. Robert described it as “more thematically consistent and ‘monolithic’ in appearance.”

He hopes that curiosity, the large black front and the loud whirling sounds it produces will make people gravitate towards this exhibit. Come and see what you think?!

Robert Moore first started building rolling ball sculptures in 2008. Since setting up his own garden shed as a workshop and learning how to weld, he has produced a number of wall-mounted and freestanding machines. His hobby soon accelerated and he has since been commissioned to create sculptures by private individuals, a luxury hotel, and a pharmaceutical company.

The ‘Infinitram’ is a self-funded and particularly intensive project built over a period of two years. He describes it as: ‘A homage to both the known order and unknown disorder within molecular and planetary systems of inner and outer space.’
